Critical Introduction
TThere are numerous similarities and differences in "The CONTENTS" of these 4 editions. First, the 1st
ed. is the only edition in which the chapter numbers in
"The Contents" correlate with those on the "Title Page" and within the text of the book itself. However,
this edition does have 1 chapter that is not included in the 2nd - 4th eds.,
which is "CHAP. II. Of the GROWTH of the PYRATES in the
West-Indies, their Settlement in Providence, and the Arrival of Governor ROGERS at the Island." found on pg. 4
though parts of the text from this chapter are reproduced in "The INTRODUCTION" of the 2nd - 4th eds.
Additionally, the 1st ed. also features 2 subsections of chapters "CHAP. X. Of Capt. BAR. ROBERTS, and
his CREW., that appear on pg.
11 They are:
They are: 1- "OF Capt. GEORGE BRADLEY."
2- "Of Capt. FENN", which do not
which do not
appear in the 2nd - 4th eds.
These 2 subsections are another notable fact that accounts for some of the differences.
In the 2nd ed. "The Contents" are not collated properly: pgs. 7- 12 are in the correct order and then
what should be pgs.
13-14 are moved to the end of this section and instead the text skips to what should be pg. 16 and then to pg. 15
The similarities are:
1- "CHAP. I. Of Capt. AVERY" is always CHAP I., though it is on pg. 3 in the 1st ed. (which is pg.1 of “The CONTENTS in that edition - hereafter referred to as this section),
and on 8 in the 2nd - 4th eds. (which is the pg.2 of this section in those editions).
2- "CHAP. IV. Of Major STEDE BONNET and his CREW." is CHAP IV. throughout all the editions. However, it
is on pg.
5 of the 1st ed. (which is the pg 3. of this section in that edition), whereas
in the 2nd - 4th eds. it on pg. 10 (which is the pg.4 of this section in those editions.
3- "CHAP. VI. Of Capt. CHARLES VANE and, his CREW" is always CHAP. VI. This chapter is located on pg.
7 of the 1st ed., and on pg. 11
of the 2nd - 4th eds. both which are the pg. 5 of this section.
4- "CHAP. VII. Of Capt. JOHN RACKAM, and his CREW" is always CHAP. VII. However, in the 1st ed. it is
located on pg.
8 (pg. 6 of this section), whereas in the 2nd - 4th eds. it is on pg.11
(which is the pg. 5 of those editions).
4a - The subsection of CHAP VII. "The LIFE of MARY READ." is on pg. 8 of the 1st ed., and on pg. 12 of the 2nd - 4th eds. (both of which are the pg. 7 of this section).
4b- The subsection of "CHAP. VII "The LIFE of ANNE BONNY" the second subsection of this chapter, is located
on 9 of the 1st ed. (which is the pg. 7 of this section),
whereas in the 2nd -4th eds. it is on pg. 12 (which is the pg. 6 of this section).
5- 5- "CHAP. IX. Of Capt. HOWEL DAVIS, and his CREW" is always CHAP. IX in this section. However, this
chapter is located on pg. 11 of the 1st ed. (pg. 8 of this section in that ed.),
whereas in the 2nd - 4th eds. it is located on pg. 12 (pg. 6 of this section in those eds.). While Davis appears as CHAP. XI. in this section of all eds., he is marked as CHAP.
VIII on the "Title Page"
of the 2nd - 4th eds., but is CHAP IX. in the text.
6-
"CHAP. XVIII. Of Captain SPRIGGS, and his CREW", though not present in the 1st ed., remains "CHAP. XVIII"
through the 2nd-4th eds. However, in the 2nd ed. this Chapter is on pg.
13
(the pg. 7 of this section); in the 3rd & 4th eds., it is on pg.
16 (the pg. 7 of this section).
The Differeneces are:
1- "Of Capt. MARTEL.”, and his Crew, is CHAP. III. in the 1st ed., whereas it is CHAP II. in the 2nd -
4th eds. However, it is on the pg. 3 of this section in all editions, which is pg.
5 in the 1st ed., and pg.
9 of the 2nd - 4th eds.
2- "Of Capt. Thatch alias BLACK-BEARD" from the 1st ed., becomes "Of Captain TEACH, alias BLACK-BEARD",
This is "CHAP. V." in the 1st ed. located on pg.

16
(which is pg. 10 of this section), whereas in the 3rd & 4th eds.. it is listed on 13 (which is pg. 7 of this section).
